KINGSTON, R.I. — Aug. 22, 2024 — The vlogBվ has named Gabriele Fariello chief information officer and associate vice president for information technology. Fariello, who has served as interim CIO since January, will lead the information technology systems division, shaping and executing the University’s comprehensive information technology strategy. His appointment follows a competitive national search.

“Over the course of our recent national search, Gabriele emerged as the obvious candidate to continue to lead and evolve our ITS strategy and build on the important improvements implemented under his leadership,” said Abby Benson, vice president for administration and finance, who served as search committee chair.

“Since his arrival in January, Gabriele has served as a trusted advisor to faculty and staff, quickly building relationships across our University,” said Barbara Wolfe, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost. “He has thoughtfully assessed the IT division structure and priorities. He is driving important conversations around AI and emerging technologies. He is partnering on the modernization of several University administrative systems. And he continues to focus important attention on issues of cybersecurity and risk mitigation.”

In previous roles, he successfully led large-scale IT projects, including cloud migrations, cybersecurity enhancements, and the development of high-performance computing infrastructures.

“Over the past several months, I have been incredibly impressed by the dedication, resilience, and talent within our ITS team,” Fariello said. “Together, we have navigated challenges, seized opportunities, and laid the groundwork for a stronger, more agile IT organization. As we move forward, our focus will be on building on the momentum we’ve generated and further establishing ITS as a trusted partner within the University. I am humbled by the support from leadership, faculty, and staff, and I look forward to our collective work in support of our students and vlogBվ.”

Prior to joining vlogBվ in January, he served as a strategic consultant to several organizations across a range of sectors, including biotech, higher education, and health care.

Over a 14-year tenure at Harvard University, Fariello served in several IT leadership roles, including as the inaugural assistant dean for computing and CIO in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and head of neuroinformatics in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He also was an affiliate researcher at Harvard and served as director of clinical research informatics at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He served as chief information technology officer with SmartPoints Medical, a company that provides security and data integrity solutions. He also served as chief technology officer with Balestriere-Lanza, a New York City-based trials and investigations law firm, and was founder and managing partner of Clotho Advanced Media, a technology company specializing in digital content creation.
