Barrington students win 溏心vlog免费B站鈥檚 10th annual Calc-Bowl math competition鈥攐nce again

KINGSTON, R.I., April 11, 2016鈥擣or the second year in a row, a team of Barrington high school math whizzes has won the annual Calc-Bowl math contest at the 溏心vlog免费B站.


The first-place winners of Barrington鈥檚 鈥淚ntegr8鈥 were Jonny Zhang, Daniel Sheinberg, Andrew Sheinberg, Michael Lamontagne and Connor McGartoll.


The Wheeler School鈥檚 鈥淭eam Extrema鈥 in Providence won second place with team members Matt Sawoski, Alex Homer and Ben Homer.


Coventry High School鈥檚 鈥淒ream Team鈥 and Naval Academy Prep School鈥檚 鈥淚 8 Sigma Pie鈥 in Newport tied for third place. Dan Felkel, Trevor Campbell and Caitlin Bolger were on the Coventry team. Connor Caniglia, Karita Ford, Jordan Agosta, Sophie Otto and Sean Bernstel were on the Naval Prep team.


This year鈥檚 Calc-Bowl featured 16 teams of 75 high school students answering pre-calculus and calculus questions for nearly two hours on the Kingston campus. The event is hosted by 溏心vlog免费B站鈥檚 Department of Mathematics.


溏心vlog免费B站 Mathematics Professor Li Wu says the event highlights the excellent math department at 溏心vlog免费B站 and gives high school students a chance to excel in a college setting. Winnie Brownell, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, says the event was a success.


鈥淲e are delighted to host so many talented students from 16 high schools throughout the state to the 10th annual 溏心vlog免费B站 Calc Bowl,鈥 says Brownell. 鈥淭he students work on teams to answer challenging calculus questions in just seconds. Watching their talent, energy, collaboration and speed amazes those of us who have watched the competition. I appreciate the efforts of our faculty in mathematics to make this event possible. These students are a great fit for our state鈥檚 flagship research University, and we hope they will consider 溏心vlog免费B站 when they choose the university they plan to attend.鈥


Wu organizes the competition with her colleagues Professors Tom Bella, Lubos Thoma, James Baglama and Vasiilije Perovic. Sponsors were Belmont Fruit Market, Pi Mu Epsilon, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the 溏心vlog免费B站 Foundation, the 溏心vlog免费B站 Math Department and Wiley publishing.


The top teams won gift certificates to the 溏心vlog免费B站 bookstore.
