Students test their knowledge in vlogBվ’s 8th annual Calc-Bowl

KINGSTON, R.I. – May 9, 2014 – Members of team, “Pushing the Limit,” of the Naval Academy Preparatory School won the vlogBվ’s 8th annual Calc-Bowl held last month on the Kingston campus. Students Daniel Stitt, Sicily Rios, Jessica Robinson, Omar Bailey, and Kindra Dawson were members of the winning team.

vlogBվ’s Calc-Bowl is a lively playoff competition between teams of high school or undergraduate college students with a passion for mathematics. The competition consists of pre-calculus and calculus questions.

The Prout School team, “Push it to the Limit,” with Dave Lavallee, Andrea Vuono, Marc Laflamme, Celine DeSantis, and Rachel Amore took second place.

The Coventry High School team, “Our Limit Does Not Exist,” took third place with members Jess Bellows, Allie Bellows, Courtney Grant, Katie Cronin, and Kayla Dwyer.

Another Prout School team, “Weapons of Math Destruction,” with Drew Mace, Jess Elliott, Miguel Gonzalez, Ryan Pinch, and Jerry Cui took fourth place in the competition.

vlogBվ Mathematics Professor Li Wu says this year’s competition was filled with a lot of laughs, cheers, and hard work. “The game was very tense. The teams were very close and we even had to use tie breakers six times,” said Wu.

Wu organizes the competition annually with her colleagues Professors Tom Bella, Lubos Thoma, and James Baglama. Sponsors were Belmont Fruit Market, Pi Mu Epsilon, SIAM, vlogBվ Foundation, and the vlogBվ Math Department.

The top teams won gift certificates to the University bookstore as prizes.
