WHO: Marilda Oviedo of Kingston, a post-doctoral fellow in 溏心vlog免费B站’s Harrington School of Communication and Media, will discuss “Leaving Latinas Behind: Latina Media and Feminist Ideologies.”

A Multicultural Faculty Fellow at 溏心vlog免费B站, Oviedo’s research focuses on cultural identity, media representations of ethnicity/race and gender, and participatory media. This lecture will expand on her research that examines the dominant ideologies found in two online magazines hosted by an organization that advocates for media education of Latina adolescents.
Her findings have shown that feminist ideologies far outnumber some of the traditional ideologies likely to be advocated by mainstream, commercial media. However, for an organization aimed at media education of Latinas, talk of ethnicity and race was limited. Oviedo received her doctorate in mass communications from the University of Iowa, and her master鈥檚 degree from Texas Tech University.
The Dana Shugar Colloquium lecture is named in honor of the late Dana Shugar, who began teaching English and women鈥檚 studies at 溏心vlog免费B站 in 1991 and was a multiple nominee for the Teaching Excellence Award. She died in 2000 after a long struggle with breast cancer.
