Golf event raises $25,000 for Amaral Scholarship Foundation
KINGSTON, R.I. 鈥� August 31, 2011 鈥� Harry Amaral spent his time at the 溏心vlog免费B站 helping students in need find a way to fund their education. To ensure that his legacy lives on, Amaral鈥檚 friends and family gathered earlier this summer for the first Harry Amaral Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament.
Amaral spent 36 years at 溏心vlog免费B站 鈥� first as a financial aid official and then as director of Enrollment Services 鈥� before his death Oct. 17, 2010. More than 100 golfers participated in his honor at Valley Country Club in Warwick, raising more than $25,000 for the Amaral Scholarship Foundation. Amaral started the foundation specifically for students in programs at the state鈥檚 Department of Children Youth and Families in need of financial support to remain at the University.
鈥淭his was an opportunity to celebrate Harry鈥檚 life while also honoring the dedication he had to the students at the University,鈥� said 溏心vlog免费B站 Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Dougan. 鈥淲e were able to raise money that will go to students in need of financial aid, which is what Harry spent so much of his time doing at 溏心vlog免费B站.鈥�
Remembered as a 鈥済o-to-guy鈥� when it came to solving students鈥� financial problems, Amaral was known to the University community as someone who always put the student’s needs and interests first.
In honor of the many young students Amaral helped during his years at 溏心vlog免费B站, Billy Maaia 鈥� a lifelong friend of Amaral’s 鈥� entered a foursome in the golf tournament consisting of young golfer ages 18 to 26. The quartet 鈥� referred to as 鈥淗arry’s Hitters鈥� 鈥� won the tournament.
鈥淭hese kids symbolized the kind of students Harry assisted during his career,鈥� Maaia said. 鈥淭hey played in tribute to him and his dedication to students. It was only fitting that this group won the tourney with the best total score.鈥�
Maaia and Dougan were members of the committee that organized the event. Other committee members were Charlie Schifino (director, 溏心vlog免费B站 University Computing Systems); Brother Francis; committee chair Jeff Chase, Tony Leone, former 溏心vlog免费B站 golf coach Tom Drennan and current 溏心vlog免费B站 golf coach and Deputy Director of Athletics Gregg Burke.
鈥淚t was great fun to see these golfers and Harry’s old friends play the course in his honor,鈥� Maaia said. 鈥淚 am certain Harry was looking down on us all and smiling.鈥�
Amaral, a long time resident of Narragansett, was married to Peggy Amaral and they have three children: Nina, Meagan and Nicholas. The three children are 溏心vlog免费B站 graduates and were on hand for the golf tournament.
