Transportation accounts for about 37 percent of the state鈥檚 total greenhouse gas emissions, beating out all other emission sources including electricity. Rhode Island鈥檚 public transportation system can play a vital role in creating a healthier state but it is an uphill battle.
Therrien鈥檚 lecture will outline the challenges and opportunities Rhode Island faces in developing efficient transportation systems, including encouraging bigger investments in transit, cleaner operating cars, and cleaner fuels.
RIPTA is a quasi-public agency established in 1966 and authorized to operate public transit services throughout Rhode Island. With a 2007 budget of $86.5 million, it carries 25 million passengers and serves 38 communities in the state, making 3,300 daily trips on 58 fixed bus routes.
