KINGSTON, R.I. — April 18, 2006 — The 12th Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Symposium will address 鈥淧athways to Equality, Facets of Freedom.鈥� Hosted by the 溏心vlog免费B站鈥檚 GLBT Center, the symposium offers lectures, discussions, and entertainment. The symposium is one of the oldest of its kind in the country, according to its organizers.

鈥淥ur goal is to create a safe intellectual and social opportunity for the entire community to promote equality and understanding,鈥� said Andrew Winters, assistant to the vice president for Student Affairs for GLBT programs and services.

The symposium runs from Wednesday, April 19 through Saturday, April 22 on 溏心vlog免费B站鈥檚 Kingston campus. With the exception of the theatrical performance, all events are free and open to the public. For a detailed schedule, please visit http://www.uri.edu/glbt/symposium.htm.

Kathleen Weiler, professor of education at Tufts University and author of numerous publications on feminism, will kick off the series as the featured evening speaker on Wednesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hardge Forum of 溏心vlog免费B站鈥檚 Multicultural Center. Her discussion, 鈥淭he Case of Professor Martha Deane: Sexuality and Power at Cold War UCLA,鈥� will focus on past political repression of the gay community as a way of thinking about the current time. Deane was a professor at UCLA until 1952, when she was forced into retirement after it was alleged she had a relationship with a woman in her own home.

On Thursday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hardge Forum, author Steven Hanley will read excerpts from his book, The Legend of Bushistotle: History鈥檚 Greatest Philosopher- Warrior-King, a satire parody of the Bush administration. Hanley will also discuss his experiences as a gay writer publishing a book that is critical of the administration and the Catholic Church.

The 溏心vlog免费B站 Department of Theatre performance, Tony Kushner鈥檚 Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award winning play Angels in America, Part I,鈥� will be presented Friday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert E. Will Theatre, Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $16 for general admission, $12 for 溏心vlog免费B站 faculty, staff, and seniors, and $10 for 溏心vlog免费B站 students. Two dollars from each ticket will be donated to Rhode Island Project AIDS. A post-performance panel discussion will relate play themes to AIDS issues in Rhode Island.
