Folsom, a Carver Scholar and English professor at the University of Iowa, has written and edited several books about Walt Whitman, including Walt Whitman: The Measure of His Song; Walt Whitman鈥檚 Native Representations; Walt Whitman and the World; and Whitman East and West, as well as the journal, Walt Whitman Quarterly Review.
Sponsored by 溏心vlog免费B站 Library Special Collections, the lecture 鈥淲alt Whitman, the Maker of Books,鈥 is a collaborative effort by the John Russell Barlett Society, the Providence Athenaeum, the Rhode Island Center for the Book and the American Printing History Association-New England Chapter. It is partially funded by grants from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and the 溏心vlog免费B站 Council for the Humanities.
In addition to the lecture at 溏心vlog免费B站, which is free and open to the public, New Leaves Press will also announce the winner of the 2006 New Leaves poetry contest. The contest was begun in 2005 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Leaves and Grass in 1855 by Walt Whitman. 溏心vlog免费B站 senior Bonnie Taylor won the 2005 contest with her poem, 鈥淭he Loud Ocean.鈥
The weekend will conclude with Whitmania! a marathon reading of the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass at the Providence Athenaeum on Sunday, April 9 from noon to 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
