KINGSTON, R.I. — November 9, 2004 — The 溏心vlog免费B站鈥檚 Department of Journalism and the Rhode Island Press Association will host 鈥淛ournalism Day 2004鈥� on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 溏心vlog免费B站鈥檚 Kingston Campus. The day includes morning and afternoon panel discussions on pertinent issues faced by the working press and a luncheon. While the discussions are free and open to the public, there is a $15 charge for lunch.
During the luncheon, the late A.J. Liebling, media critic for The New Yorker, author and reporter for The Providence Journal will be inducted into the Rhode Island Journalism Hall of Fame.
The keynote speaker at lunch will be Mark Jurkowitz, media writer for The Boston Globe since 1997. He was the Globe鈥檚 ombudsman for two years. Prior to that, Jurkowitz spent seven years as media critic for The Boston Phoenix and authored its “Don’t Quote Me” column. A graduate of Boston University, Jurkowitz began his journalism career at the Tab Newspapers where he served for two years as editor. He spent a number of years as a talk radio host, appearing on WRKO, WHDH and WBZ and is currently a regular panelist on the weekly “Beat the Press” program on Boston’s PBS outlet, WGBH-TV. Jurkowitz also teaches media ethics at Tufts University.

Morning Panel: 鈥淧ublic Safety vs. the Right to Know鈥�
The panel discussion will begin at 10:30 a.m., Atrium II, Memorial Union. Panelist include Bob Cooper, Governor鈥檚 Commission on Disabilities; Joel Rawson, executive editor, The Providence Journal; Cathy Callahan, reporter, The Newport Daily News; and Staci Kolb, attorney, Blish and Cavanagh, Providence. Scott Pickering, editor, East Bay Newspapers will moderate.
Lunch: 12:30 p.m., University Club
Afternoon Panel: 鈥淪ources and Credibility鈥�
The panel discussion will begin at 3:30 p.m., Room 271 Chafee Social Science Building. Panelists include Tony Marro, retired editor, Newsday, Long Island; Tracy Breton, reporter, The Providence Journal; Tim Cotter, city editor, The New London Day; and John Pantalone, lecturer, 溏心vlog免费B站 Department of Journalism. Tom Heslin, managing editor, The Providence Journal, will moderate.
