THE FOUR ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS <\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have a set of questions I ask my students,\u201d says Olagundoye. \u201cThe first I ask is, \u2018Who am I?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Typically, students answer with an inventory, sharing how many dogs they have or if their grandparents are still living. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI say, \u2018No, that\u2019s not what I\u2019m asking. I want to know\u2014when you\u2019re alone in a room or a car, and the radio has stopped working, and you ask yourself, \u2018Who am I?\u2019\u2014how would you answer that?\u201d Olagundoye says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThen I ask, \u2018Why are you here?\u2019 and they\u2019ll say they\u2019re here to get a degree to get a good job,\u201d Olagundoye says. \u201cAnd I say, \u2018No, that\u2019s not what I\u2019m asking. I\u2019m asking about your purpose on Earth.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Olagundoye\u2019s students nail the third question: What do you believe is wrong with the world? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWho am I? Why am I here? What do you believe is wrong with the world? How can we make what is wrong right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey have so much to say: climate change, food insecurity, technology, social media, and the resulting identity crises we\u2019re all going through right now.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this question speaks to students\u2019 agency\u2014and hope, Olagundoye explains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHumanity is the cause of many of the global issues we face now,\u201d she says, \u201cbut humanity is also one of the solutions to it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Self-assessment completed, students examine leadership theories. Olagundoye leans toward authentic and transformational leadership approaches. Authentic leaders favor genuineness, serving alongside the people they work with. Transformational leaders create change by setting an example, Olagundoye says, riffing off New York Times bestselling author Simon Sinek\u2019s Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don\u2019t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe qualities of selflessness and integrity are lacking right now in society,\u201d Olagundoye notes. \u201cThe way I approach leadership is selflessness; that is, the leader eats last.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
