The visit occurred just over a month after Ali\u2019s first professional defeat\u2014he lost to Joe Frazier at Madison Square Garden\u2014in the ring, and just four days before the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Clay v. United States and the question of Ali\u2019s religious objection to participation in the Vietnam War. The court sided with Ali and expanded the exceptions for conscientious objectors to be excepted from the draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reporting on Ali\u2019s appearance in The Good 5 Cent Cigar (April 21, 1971), Steve Cheslow \u201972 wrote, \u201cAli now speaks in a subdued tone; but his words hit the crowds just as lightning-quick jabs hit his ring opponents.
